Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Filmmaking Company InterPositive

Netflix announced Thursday the acquisition of InterPositive, the AI filmmaking technology company founded by Ben Affleck, in a move that positions the company's growing content ambitions alongside creator-facing credentials it has struggled to establish in recent months.

Affleck, who founded InterPositive in 2022 after observing what he described as a 'misalignment between early AI tools and the practical demands of filmmaking', will join Netflix as Senior Advisor. The acquisition brings InterPositive's entire team into Netflix.

What does InterPositive do exactly?

The company's technology centers on a proprietary model trained on datasets filmed on a controlled soundstage, designed to capture the vocabulary and workflow of actual film production. The model is built to handle real-world production challenges including missing shots, background replacements, and lighting inconsistencies while preserving what Affleck describes as "cinematic rules" and creative intent. The approach deliberately prioritizes smaller, focused datasets over broad-scale model training, with tools designed to serve filmmakers rather than automate their decisions.

"I wanted to build a workflow that captures what happens on a set, with vocabulary that matched the language cinematographers and directors already spoke," Affleck wrote in a statement released alongside the announcement.

The timing is notable. Netflix has been under sustained scrutiny from the creative community during its pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery, with critics questioning whether a company consolidating that much content infrastructure, catalog IP, and distribution capability is genuinely positioned as a partner to independent artists. The DOJ's antitrust review of that deal — which includes a civil subpoena to at least one other entertainment company asking it to describe potential exclusionary conduct by Netflix — has amplified those concerns.

Against that backdrop, the InterPositive acquisition reads as a deliberate counter-signal. Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone framed the deal around a principle that has become central to Netflix's public messaging during the WBD review period: "innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them."

Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria was more direct about the creative community stakes, noting that "new tools should expand creative freedom, not constrain it or replace the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews."

So what happens next?

Whether the acquisition moves the needle on creator trust depends on what Netflix does with the technology once it scales inside the company. InterPositive's architecture was deliberately designed with constraints: tools built to keep creative decisions in the hands of artists, with explicit protections against the kind of performance-capture applications that have fueled labor disputes across the industry. Maintaining those constraints as the technology integrates into a global content operation is a different challenge than building them in a controlled environment.

What Netflix has done here is put a filmmaker's name and philosophy on its AI strategy at a moment when the industry is watching closely. Affleck's credibility with the creative community is real. So is the scrutiny Netflix is operating under right now. The question the InterPositive deal raises but doesn't yet answer: does creator-led innovation inside a company consolidating this much market power still count as creator-led?
