YouTube TV and NBCU's Battle Could Disrupt Your Sunday Night Football

Your access to Sunday Night Football and other major channels is on the line as Google’s YouTube TV and NBCUniversal are locked in a high-stakes carriage dispute that could trigger a blackout this week. As first reported by CNBC, the two giants have until September 30 to strike a new deal, leaving millions of subscribers facing a significant channel disruption.

  • The price of Peacock: At the heart of the conflict is a classic tug-of-war over money and market power. In a statement, YouTube TV claims NBCU is "asking us to pay more than what they charge consumers for the same content on Peacock," while NBCU fired back that the $3 trillion Google is "demanding preferential treatment" and has "refused the best rates." The conflict is fueled by frustration that NBCU is devaluing its own cable channels by siphoning popular content to its cheaper, standalone Peacock app.
  • The customer collateral: A blackout would affect YouTube TV's roughly 10 million customers, who would lose sports like the NFL and NBA, as well as broadcast networks NBC and Telemundo. In a concession, YouTube TV is promising subscribers a $10 monthly credit if the channels go dark for an extended period.

This impasse is a power move in the streaming era. YouTube TV is positioning itself to make an example out of a media giant, a move that could give it significant leverage in future negotiations as these fights over channel pricing become the new normal.

  • Also on our radar: The standoff with NBCU is part of a larger battle for YouTube TV, which is simultaneously at an impasse with TelevisaUnivision over a deal that also expires September 30. YouTube TV's muscle to take on these fights has grown considerably, in part due to its acquisition of the highly coveted NFL Sunday Ticket package, which has made it a seismic force in the pay-TV market.
