Pluto Gets ‘The X-Files'

Pluto TV is adding all 11 seasons of the iconic sci-fi series “The X-Files” to its free, ad-supported streaming service starting January 1, 2026. The move pits a classic franchise against subscription services, betting that free access can win viewers in a crowded market.

  • Two ways to watch: Viewers can stream the complete series either on-demand or through a new 24/7 channel dedicated to the show. At launch, Pluto plans to kick things off with a full, chronological run of the series, followed by curated weekend marathons. The new stream will join a sci-fi category that already features channels for genre titans like “Star Trek” and “Doctor Who.”

  • The FAST play: While the series is already on Hulu and Disney+ for subscribers, the move makes the entire run free to watch with ads. It’s a classic strategy for the FAST leader, which has built a deep library by licensing popular, binge-worthy shows and giving them their own dedicated channels, reinforcing its commitment to the "lean-back" linear model.

  • The truth is still out there: The timing is notable, as a franchise reboot is reportedly in the works. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is developing the new take, ensuring the brand remains relevant even as its original run finds a new, free-to-stream home.

The deal highlights the growing power of the FAST market, where legacy IP is the new gold. By making a beloved franchise freely available, Pluto TV is betting that nostalgia, not another subscription fee, is the key to keeping viewers tuned in. The "X-Files" acquisition is a textbook example of Pluto TV's broader content playbook, which focuses on using iconic franchises to build out its massive library of curated channels. The strategy stems from a belief that the future of streaming isn't just on-demand, but also in modernizing the classic, lean-back TV experience to combat subscription fatigue.
