Satellite Sidelined as DIRECTV Launches Multi-View Streaming

DIRECTV has launched its legacy “Mix Channels” feature on its streaming platform, allowing users to watch four channels at once, but the company is pointedly leaving its satellite customers out of the upgrade.

  • Four screens, one remote: Subscribers with Signature or genre-based plans can now access five curated feeds for sports, news, business, and kids. A “Locals Mix” with network affiliates is rolling out in some markets, while a Sunday Sports Mix is timed to arrive for the NFL season on September 7.
  • A tale of two services: The playbook isn't new for DIRECTV, which has offered multiview on satellite since 2008 and tested a streaming version during the 2024 elections. But a spokesperson told The TV Answer Man! that the new mixes are exclusive to streaming, a clear signal that future innovation is reserved for its growing digital audience.
  • The path forward: This move reinforces DIRECTV's strategic shift, treating its streaming service as the home for new features while the legacy satellite platform is maintained but no longer prioritized for upgrades.

The new multiview feature is tied to DIRECTV's specific streaming packages, which come with their own genre-based pricing structures. The streaming-first approach is part of a broader company strategy to grow its digital business as the legacy satellite market continues to shrink.
