Charter’s News Channels Muscle Onto Comcast’s Turf

Charter is expanding the reach of its Spectrum News channels through a new distribution deal with Comcast’s Xfinity TV, pushing into four new major markets and dialing up the competition for local broadcasters.

  • New screens, new scenes: The deal brings Spectrum News to Xfinity customers in Connecticut, Northern New Jersey, Orlando, and Tampa. The rollout builds on an earlier public-service arrangement in California that is now permanent, with Charter also bolstering its local news teams in Sacramento and San Francisco.

  • From breakup to buildup: The partnership comes just months after a similar news-sharing deal between Charter and Altice USA fell apart, suggesting a strategic pivot toward securing carriage with larger providers. In a statement, Spectrum Networks EVP Mike Bair said, “while local news coverage across the country is shrinking, Spectrum News is expanding to provide more access when people need it most.”

The move is about more than just cable. Charter is backing the play with a multi-platform strategy that includes its streaming network, Spectrum News+, and a mobile app with over 5 million downloads, signaling a broader push to get its news content in front of viewers on any screen.

  • The wider view: The Comcast deal is part of a larger growth story for Spectrum News, which has been steadily expanding its footprint with new networks in states like Alabama and a strategy focused on innovation.
