Metadata’s new frontier: Simply.TV expands with Red Bee acquisition

As global streaming services vie for ways to stand out in a competitive market, metadata solutions have taken center stage in shaping UX and driving viewer engagement in a trackable way. Metadata provider Simply.TV has announced the acquisition of Red Bee Media’s Content Discovery Business, alongside securing a majority growth equity investment. This transaction marks Simply.TV’s first institutional funding and further positions the company to deliver enhanced content discovery capabilities, particularly in the U.S.The backstory: Founded in 2019 by Daniel Rühmann and Morten Trolle, Simply.TV provides metadata that helps video aggregators, streaming platforms, and device manufacturers improve user search, discovery, and recommendations. More than 200 customers, including Telenor, TitanOS, A1, Orange, and Zapping, use Simply.TV’s data to power their services. By integrating Red Bee Media’s U.S. dataset with Simply.TV’s technology platform, the company aims to extend its reach to a growing global customer base.Standards for scalability: “We built an innovative technology platform to set new standards for scalability, flexibility, and metadata quality, empowering our customers to create new and engaging user experiences,” said Rühmann. “This acquisition will help extend our impact, accelerating our global expansion, strengthening our position in the U.S., and enabling Simply.TV to deliver even greater value to our customers worldwide.”
