NESN overhauls live sports delivery in new Harmonic deal

New England Sports Network (NESN) is modernizing its video delivery platform for its 4 million homes through a new partnership with Harmonic and Astound Business Solutions. The move is designed to improve video quality while creating new revenue streams through advanced, localized advertising.

  • The tech upgrade: The new system is built on Harmonic's XOS Advanced Media Processor, which uses AI-powered encoding to reduce the network's bitrate needs by up to 50%. This provides a sharper picture for viewers and more efficient delivery for NESN.

  • Follow the money: The deal's core strategic value comes from its edge ad insertion technology. By serving ads closer to the viewer, NESN can replace generic commercial breaks with localized ones. Kenny Elcock, NESN's VP of technology, called it a path to "exciting new revenue opportunities."

  • A quick turnaround: Astound Business Solutions deployed the entire platform in just two months. Gil Rudge, a senior vice president at Harmonic, described the project as a "milestone achievement," adding that the platform is built to create better viewing experiences while driving more revenue.

For regional sports networks like NESN, investing in flexible, IP-based infrastructure is becoming a key strategy to counter cord-cutting and build more resilient business models.

The move comes as the entire broadcast industry grapples with its future, from reacting to the Future of Television Initiative report to navigating ongoing carriage disputes. Meanwhile, other sports networks are also making strategic shifts, with FanDuel Sports Network recently naming a new crewing provider for 2026.
